Quarantine & Inspection

Livestock Quarantine & Inspection: What Happens Before and After Shipping

Quarantine and inspection are how countries keep animal diseases out. For buyers, livestock quarantine and inspection can happen at two points: before the animals leave the exporting farm, and again when they arrive in your country. Knowing what each stage involves helps you plan the time, the facilities and the costs, and avoids surprises on arrival day.

Two Stages of Quarantine and Inspection

Before departure

Some destinations require animals to be kept apart from other livestock for a set period before shipping, while tests are completed and health is monitored. Where this applies, we isolate the animals on the farm or at an approved facility.

On arrival

Many countries inspect animals at the port or airport, and some require a period of quarantine at an approved facility before they can go to your farm. The length and rules are set by your authorities.

Preparing Your Animals for the Journey

The best way to pass inspection is to prevent problems earlier. We keep animals that are due to ship separate from the rest of the herd, keep clean records and confirm that the papers match each animal before the crate is closed. Those habits make the arrival inspection routine rather than stressful.

How to Prepare for Arrival

  • Ask about quarantine early. Your veterinary authority can tell you whether quarantine is required and for how long.
  • Arrange the facility. If quarantine is needed, book an approved facility or prepare a compliant space before the animals arrive.
  • Brief your clearing agent. Make sure someone is ready to present the documents and receive the animals.
  • Plan feed and water. Have supplies ready for the first hours and days after arrival.
  • Keep the herd separate. Hold new animals apart from your existing stock until they are cleared.

What If an Animal Fails Inspection?

If an inspector finds a problem, the animal may be held for re-testing, treated, kept in quarantine longer or, in the worst case, refused entry under local rules. Thorough veterinary checks before departure greatly reduce this risk, which is why we complete them carefully and keep a clear record for every animal.

Livestock Quarantine and Inspection: Questions

Do all countries require quarantine?

No. Some require it, some only inspect at the border, and rules differ by species. Your veterinary authority can confirm what applies to you.

How long does quarantine last?

The length is set by the importing country and depends on the animals and the destination. We will tell you what we know for your country, and your authority has the final word.

Who pays for quarantine?

Quarantine at your end is normally arranged and paid for by the importer. Any isolation before shipping is included in your quote.

Can the animals go straight to my farm?

Only if your country does not require quarantine and the animals are cleared at inspection. Otherwise they go to a quarantine facility first.
