Start a Livestock Herd: Pairs, Trios and Starter Herds

To start a livestock herd the right way, begin with a matched pair, a starter trio or a custom group from Fargo Family Farms, so your animals arrive ready to breed and settle together.

Buying a pair or trio keeps your animals company, saves you from sourcing one animal at a time and gets your breeding program started sooner.

Buying guide

How to choose a breeding pair or trio

A breeding pair is one male and one female. A starter trio is one male and two females, which suits many small herds because the male is shared between two females. A custom group can include more animals or a mix of breeds.

Choose breeds that fit your purpose, such as meat, milk or fiber, and ask about registration if you plan to sell registered offspring. Keep in mind that a male needs separate pens at times. Send us your goals and facilities and we will suggest a group.

Before you buy a breeding group

  • Choose the purpose: meat, milk, fiber or pets
  • Ask about registration for registered offspring
  • Plan pens, including separate space for males
  • Check ages, health records and breeding status
  • Confirm shipping or pickup before you commit
