How to choose alpacas and llamas

Alpacas are the fiber specialists. They are smaller and quieter than llamas, and are shorn once a year for fleece that is prized for knitting and spinning. Llamas are larger and are often used as companions, pack animals or guards for sheep and goats.

Both species are herd animals and should never live alone. Plan for at least two, with sturdy fencing, shade, shelter and clean water. Tell us your acreage and goals and we will suggest the right animals.

Before you buy

  • Decide the goal: fiber, companionship or guarding
  • Plan for at least two animals
  • Prepare fencing, shade and dry shelter
  • Plan for yearly shearing of alpacas
  • Ask for health records and confirm shipping
