Live Animal Air Transport: How Goats and Sheep Travel by Air Freight

Live animal air transport is the fastest way to deliver goats and sheep to buyers overseas. It suits registered breeding stock, valuable genetics and smaller shipments, where a short journey matters more than the lowest transport cost. We plan the crates, the airline booking and the paperwork, from our farms in the USA and France to the airport nearest you.

When Air Transport Is the Right Choice

Choose air if

You are buying registered breeding stock or small groups, your destination is far away, or you want the animals to spend as little time in transit as possible.

Choose sea if

You are importing a large commercial group and cost per animal matters most. See our sea transport guide.

From Farm Gate to Arrival Airport

  • Health checks and certificate. A veterinarian examines each animal and the export health certificate is prepared for your destination.
  • Crate preparation. Animals are loaded into purpose-built crates with ventilation, bedding, and access to water.
  • Road to the departure airport. Crated animals travel by road to the airport, where the airline checks the crates and documents.
  • Flight. The animals fly as live animal cargo, handled separately from standard freight.
  • Arrival and clearance. Customs and veterinary inspection take place at the destination airport before the animals are collected.

The Crate Matters

Airlines accept live animals only in containers that meet the IATA Live Animals Regulations. A good crate gives enough space to stand and turn, strong ventilation, leak-proof flooring and clear labelling. Getting this right protects the animals and keeps your shipment from being refused at the airport.

What Affects Air Freight Cost and Timing

Air freight is normally charged on chargeable weight, which is the greater of the real weight and the volume of the crates. The number of animals, crate size, the route and the airline all change the price. Flight availability matters too, because airlines set their own rules for live animals, and some restrict them during very hot or cold weather. We check these points before quoting, so the schedule you receive is realistic.
